In post-1986 Uganda, there exists an interesting dynamic where some Millennials in the informal sector tend to look down upon their peers working in the civil service. What’s intriguing is that both groups often benefit from family connections, as parental support plays a significant role in accessing opportunities, whether in government positions or starting businesses.

It’s important to note that this disdain for civil servants seems misplaced. Those working in the civil service often endure low wages and work tirelessly to maintain a system that faces significant challenges. It’s only fair that they receive benefits like fuel cards and insurance to compensate for their hard work and dedication.

In the interest of justice, they ought to be granted compensatory privileges, acknowledging their unwavering commitment.

As we look to the future, it’s essential to recognize that the generation that went to war and funded the war will eventually die off. This transition will require cooperation from all sectors, including civil servants and the business community. Each has a role to play in shaping the future of the nation.

Moreover, it’s worth acknowledging that some individuals in the informal sector contribute to the dysfunction of systems by engaging in practices such as buying discounted fuel and participating in corrupt procurement processes. Therefore, rather than fostering division, there is a collective responsibility to work towards a more equitable and functional society.

Instead of fomenting division, our shared obligation is to strive collectively for an equitable and functional society.

In this intricate dance of life, where familial ties weave the threads of opportunity, where the future rests in the hands of both the civil servant and the entrepreneur, it is our duty to harmonize these seemingly discordant notes into a melodious symphony of progress, justice, and prosperity for all.
